Macula

When the centre of your sight goes soft

The macula is the small spot you read and recognise faces with. With age it can wear out. Side vision stays fine, so you never go fully blind, but the middle turns blurred or bent.

What the doctor says

“No fluid on the scan usually means no benefit.”

Macula specialist · Independent reviewer

  • Dry macula is slow wear. Injections do not fix it.
  • Wet macula leaks. Injections work, and starting early matters.
  • Cover one eye and look at a door frame every week.

Dry and wet: not the same thing

  • Dry. Slow thinning over years. No injection fixes it. Good light, a magnifier, no smoking and the right vitamins are the honest plan.
  • Wet. Leaky new vessels flood the macula, and sight drops in weeks. Injections work here, and starting early matters.

If someone offers injections for a purely dry macula, ask to see the scan that shows fluid. No fluid usually means no benefit.

A home test that takes ten seconds

Cover one eye and look at a straight line, like a door frame or floor tiles. If the line bends, waves or has a gap in the middle, get checked within days. Repeat weekly with each eye separately.

Questions before a long injection plan

  • Does my scan show fluid right now?
  • How many injections, and what will we measure to say it worked?
  • What is the total cost over one year?
  • Can the gap between injections be stretched if my eye stays dry?

Go to an eye hospital today if

  • Straight lines bend suddenly in one eye
  • A grey or blank patch appears in the middle of your sight
  • Sharp pain or heavy redness after an injection
